The racial makeup of the city was 69.07% White, 11.88% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 16.66% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38.68% of the population.

There were 3,931 households out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% were married couples living together, 13.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
